A near escape.

Well it has to happen, you drive a thousand Kms. a week so you make the odd mistake.
I was driving past Barrys hotel when I saw a couple coming out. The car behind me saw them and stopped, so I went on to the lights. The other taxi declined the fare and drove on to come behind me.
Barrys hotel dances are known as "Grab a granny nights" FYI
So I decided to go around Parnell Sq and pick them up.
But as I was back at the lights again coming the other direction, another car coming the towords me grabbed them.
So with a red light in front and a no right turn...I turned right to go down O'Connell St.

Then a dark blue Avensis turned on their blue flashing lights and I pulled over.

Garda ...What have you got to say for yourself?

I am sorry I made a mistake ...says me.

Sorry is not enough... Going through a red light and making an illegal right turn is a bit more serious than sorry....Says the Garda.

Look I am VERY SORRY and I won't do it ever again. Says I.....

€150 in fines and penelty points is what you should get says ..the Garda

Look I have driven over 70 hours in the past week, I have to do that to pay the bills and if you saw that "prime time" programme you would see what I have to compete against.

Look ! Just go home straight away and go to bed.

And I was off the hook, I reckon she was looking for a drunk driver instead.

  1. Glad you didn't get fined. It happens to everyone. If I find myself getting too upset with everyone else's driving, I try to remind myself I've done some pretty stupid things. That way I keep it all in perspective.

  2. In the UK there is a feeling in the bus world that bus and truck drivers are regulated by European Drivers' Hours Regulations and yet taxis and mini-buses can drive for as long as they like.

But having said that, anyone who has just driven 70 hours deserves a lucky break with the Garda. Besides, having you behind bars would be a great loss to the rest of us, as your hugely enjoyable blog would be on temporary hold.

Try taking a bus on an illegal right turn and through a red light - it is similar to a stunt from The Transporter.

    With good wishes.

  3. It's been years ago when I lived in Tampa, Florida, and worked for United Cab. I was a divorced mother of a teenage son, and just to make ends meet, I remember working not merely 70 hour weeks, but a few 20 hour days, and once I remember a 30 hour day! And as you know, if you get a good fare, you can't go home for the day 'cause the NEXT day, you might get nothing but short fares (and grouchy people). Good luck to you, and glad the Garda took pity on you. Hope you DID go home and sleep awhile!

  4. Yes folks, instead of a breatalyser the garda should carry a nice soft pillow to see if you are sleepy. More deaths they reckon are caused by fategue htan by drink drivers.
Still I will have to stop driving for such long hours at a time.
Driving on auto pilot is not good.
Netagene you said it all just because today is busy does not mean tomorrow will be the same.

Better say a prayer to St.Faicre
